Urban Shorts #13: Urban Resources

The Urban Shorts series presents filmmakers who deal with the other city and their very own perspective in their work. Urban Shorts are urban short films, sometimes serious, sometimes funny or sometimes completely off-the-wall. Each event looks for thematically suitable locations in order to use them creatively, activate them and thus draw attention to unused spatial potential in Munich’s neighbourhoods and facilitate encounters. The Urban Shorts are intended to show how alternative urban space utilisation works. The aim is also to bring together the most diverse city dwellers at these locations. Urban Shorts is an initiative by Laura Bruns (Team stadtstattstrand), Barbara Lersch (World Design Capital FFM), Maximilian Volkart (Medientechnik München) and Andreas Rupf (ETH Zurich).

Urban Shorts at the VerhandelBar

On 12 September 2024, the Urban Shorts will make a guest appearance at the VerhandelBar. The programme includes three films that deal with the use of our urban resources from different perspectives: Operation Himmelblick from Berlin aims to draw attention to unused rooftops and their potential space. HouseEurope! is a citizens’ initiative that campaigns for EU legislation that promotes the renovation of existing buildings and prevents their demolition for speculative reasons. The architecture firm IFUB* has been a public good balance sheet since 2021. The accounting process was the driving force behind presenting the many ideas and principles for building that already existed in outline for clients and fellow companies in ten easy-to-understand guidelines.

Programme:

8:00 pm Operation Himmelblick (guest: Jakob Wirth)
8:15 pm HouseEurope! (guest: Olaf Grawert)
8:30 pm Gemeinwohl Bauen – *IFUB (guest: Bernhard Kurz)

Followed by an open discussion moderated by Laura Bruns (Team stadtstattstrand/ Urban Shorts)

Vitas:

Operation Himmelblick opened up the roof of a WBM prefabricated building in Berlin Mitte for its residents, reactivates old parking decks in Wedding, occupies the roofs of Wilhelminian-style perimeter block buildings and transforms them into a non-commercial place for encounters, community and roof gardening. https://www.instagram.com/operationhimmelblick/?hl=de

Bernhard Kurz (IFUB*) is a freelance architect and founded IFUB* – short for “Institut für u. Baukunst” – together with Johannes Krohne in 2012. The architecture firm has been public-benefit balanced since 2021. The accounting process was the driving force behind presenting the many ideas and principles for building that already existed in outline for clients and fellow companies in 10 easy-to-understand guidelines. In this way, the IFUB* team is also able to communicate the concept to the wider architectural community. Residential projects as well as modern office spaces and contemporary cafés will be realised at the Munich and Berlin locations and, from 2023, also at Lake Constance. https://www.ifub.de

Olaf Grawert (HouseEurope!) plans, writes and curates – his career is non-linear. He is an architect and partner at bplus and teaches together with Arno Brandlhuber with the teaching and research platform station.plus at ETH Zurich. In addition to his planning activities, he writes and publishes on architecture, in particular on the political and economic conditions of spatial production. He is co-founder of the European citizens’ initiative HouseEurope! https://www.houseeurope.eu
