Mapping Walk

Westend II, identifying, exploring and developing the potential of our built environment

What vacant properties are there in Munich? What plans exist? Where are the opportunities and potentials in Munich’s urban space that are waiting to be activated? In the city of Munich, too, numerous buildings are vacant and areas remain unused. Demolition and new construction are the predominant strategies of the property industry. Conversion and neighbourhood-oriented activation are sustainable alternatives. We want to explore ways and possibilities for alternatives to demolition that are oriented towards the common good. All Munich residents are invited to reorient their view of the city during various walks to prominent demolition candidates or long-term vacancies and to contribute to the public discourse on the handling and possible conversion, maintenance and preservation of Munich’s building culture.

Fabulating and fantasising in the Westend

In the second session, we want to explore the question of the significance of the existing buildings for the neighbourhood and its residents and, together with the participants, fantasise about concrete ideas and forward-looking visions for the mapped vacant buildings in the Westend.

The basis for this will be the documented results and mapped vacancies from the first meeting. The walks can be attended individually, so participation in the first walk is not a prerequisite.

In small groups, we look at specific future scenarios and develop alternative utilisation concepts for the obsolete yet relevant urban building blocks in a short space of time. Everything is allowed: models, drawings, texts, video, theatre, interviews, etc. – there are no limits to the imagination.

The event concludes with a festive award ceremony, where there are no losers, and a finale with discussion and cold drinks.

The mapping walks are organised in cooperation with the Hans Sauer Stiftung as part of a planned citizen science project. The results of the walks will contribute to the content and methodological concept of the project. The project focusses on the topic of vacancy detection and the activation of vacancies for the common good.
