Where Munich’s newest district, Freiham, is being built today, there used to be arable land, crossed by a centuries-old path. This so-called Freihamer Weg disappeared almost entirely beneath the construction site. In places, it had been lined with wild roses of the Rosa spinosissima variety, a very thorny rose that can be found on sand dunes. In this project, the replanting of specimens that were rescued from the digger mark the historical route of the old Freihamer Weg and revive it in the imagination of the viewer. Accompanying panels explain the background to the resulting “Via spinosissima,” whose thorns also represent the challenges of loss and new beginnings. Walks along the route take old and new residents alike on a poetic journey between the past and future of a district that has yet to develop its identity.
Elvira Auer, born in 1969, lives and works in Munich.
