Our awareness of reality makes us human beings. We accept ourselves as real existing beings in a consciously perceivable reality. Our physical appearance – the demarcation by the skin to the outside – defines our physical size. Seen in this way, the human being is a self-sufficient and self-contained system in the universe. The complexity of the world has increased rapidly in recent years due to digitalisation; digitalisation has not only arrived in everyday life, it determines our everyday life. What does that mean for our understanding of reality?
Susanne Steinmaßl’s work for the billboard is based on her trailer for the Munich festival KINO DER KUNST 2017, in which the artist associatively explores how we deal with virtual worlds. “Signals from unreality” (“Signale aus der Unwirklichkeit”) is a collage of reality and fiction that liberates both realms from their closed nature. How do we deal with a parallel reality that increasingly mixes with our analogue reality? Are our bodies becoming obsolete? Is the virtual an enrichment or a distraction?
KINO DER KUNST shows feature films by artists who scrutinise our contemporary reality.
