At first glance, Tim Bennett’s works for the billboard look like abstract colour compositions. After closer inspection, the colour composition turns out to be a photograph of brightly coloured commercial plasterboard. By breaking over two opposite corners, the gypsum material inside the panel comes to light, as well as the brown backing material.
The 10-fold enlargement of the original object creates an unusual three-dimensionality reminiscent of illusionist trompe-l’œil painting. In this context, plasterboard appears unstable and vulnerable. The broken edges and cracked surface support this feeling. Among other things, Bennett deals with the asthetics of simple destructive processes, repeatedly asking himself the question – What can art be and how long should it take?
Tim Bennett, born in 1973 in Rochdale, Great Britain, lives and works in Munich.
