“Au Au Au Hi Hi Hi” is a commemorative walking theater in the public space. It is based on the biographies of Philipp Auerbach, Anton Hiller and his sculpture “Gehende.”

“Au au au Hi hi hi” deals with Germany’s policy of reparation after 1945 and takes place in Munich’s public space. The project is conceived as a commemorative walking theater, in which an audience is involved in a historical-performative staging. The title “Au au au Hi hi hi”, sounds that symbolize an expression of pain and fun, refers to biographies from the period during and after the war. The protagonists are Philipp Auerbach (1906-1952), Anton Hiller (1893-1985) and his sculpture “Gehende” (1943), which is located in the garden of the Städtische Galerie in the Lenbachhaus. We regard the so-called reparation in Germany after 1945 as a process that cannot be completed, which is made visible here in the public space and can be experienced while walking. The walking theater is preceded by an extensive research phase in which a commemorative, political development is created using biographies and historical sources. This is translated into language and choreography and performed during the walking theater sessions.

A series of lithographs was printed in the lithography workshop at the Künstlerhaus München in summer 2024. The edition brings together fragments of the research on Philipp Auerbach and Anton Hiller.

The four public performances of the walking theater “Au au au Hi hi hi” are preceded by a three-day workshop with the Vocational school for the woodcarving trade in Munich and the creative laboratory of the Pfennigparade Foundation. The first part of the workshop in the garden of the Städtische Galerie in the Lenbachhaus enables a direct examination of the sculpture “Gehende”, a protagonist of the project. Together with the artist and provenance researcher Lisa Kern (Lenbachhaus), participants will question classical forms of sculptural representation of bodies. In the second part, in the Kunstgießerei Munich, Hasan and Aslan Göktepe will introduce bronze casting, a technique that is inextricably linked to this representation. The sculptures from the workshop become part of the walking theater.

Samuel Fischer-Glaser, born in Bremen in 1992, and Angela Stiegler, born in Munich in 1987, live and work in Munich.
